Matt Coyle
Matt Coyle’s signature use of black ink on white paper has developed over the years, allowing him to explore the possibilities of line and the dramatic effects of light and shadow. His draughtsmanship is impossibly good. His macabre, voyeuristic imagery borrows from the stylisations of the horror movie genre, resulting in a dreamy sense of anxiety and dread that underlies every image.
Matt Coyle studied painting at the Sydney School of Art and now lives in Tasmania where his art practice centers around drawing. Coyle has held exhibitions at Damien Minton Gallery (Sydney), Criterion Gallery (Hobart), and Sanderson Contemporary Art Gallery (Auckland, New Zealand). He received a Screen Tasmania Grant in 2005 and an Arts Tasmania Grant in 2006. In 2007 Coyle’s graphic novel “Worry Doll” was published by MAM TOR publishing (UK). He was subsequently interviewed on ABC TV and his work was reviewed in the Telegraph (UK), the Sydney Morning Herald and the Weekend Australian. Most recently Coyle has been commissioned by Art and Australia Magazine to produce a new series of drawings, published in the magazine over four issues, beginning in June 2009.
