Abdul Abdullah
Abdul Abdullah was born in Perth, Western Australia in 1986. He graduated in 2008 from Curtin University, majoring in
painting. In 2009 Abdul received the Highly Commended in the NYSPP at the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra and was
named a Perth Rising Star by Insite Magazine. In 2010 Abdul was included in the inaugural Triple J list of 25 Under 25 +
Smashin’ It and in 2011 he was a recipient of Kick Start Funding for the 2012 Nextwave Festival
Up until 2010 Abdul was primarily a painter who specialised in portraiture, but recently he has expanded his practice into an
increasingly interdisciplinary approach. The first examples of these developments in Abdul’s practice will be exhibited in a
show titled Them and Us, at Kings ARI in Melbourne in June 2011. Them and Us is supported by The City of Melbourne’s
young artist grant and explores the often-bizarre and private journeys young Muslim Australians take, on their paths to
adulthood.
