Gail was born and raised on the island of Trinidad in the Caribbean, the youngest daughter in a family of 4 girls and 2 boys. She was 15 when her family emigrated to Canada. After graduating from high school, she attended the Ontario College of Art in Toronto followed by Sheridan College to obtain a Diploma in Computer Graphics. She worked for Canadian Pacific Railway for some years doing art and graphics design for the Vice President of Information Technology.
Subsequently, she purchased an around the world ticket from Singapore Airlines and with a very small but strong knapsack, she spent over a year backpacking on her own through Asia including Japan, India, Nepal, China, Thailand, Laos, Indonesia and Malaysia, making multiple stopovers in Singapore. On returning to Canada, she took a program in Multimedia Design. In 1997, she returned to Singapore and started to teach at Nanyang Polytechnic and has been since then.
