Emerging artist Clare McCracken was born in rural north-east Victoria and moved to Melbourne in 2001. She graduated from a Bachelor of Creative Arts (Honours) from the University of Melbourne in 2004, majoring in Visual Arts and Theatre Studies. She then completed a Masters Degree in Art in Public Spaces through RMIT University in 2008.

Throughout her undergraduate degree Clare worked on a series of theatre performance as a set and costume designer. She worked with emerging playwright and director Adena Jacobs on Plums and Women, Pitch and Jetlag and on several Melbourne University Union House Theatre performances including I Love You Your Perfect Now Change and The Dutch Courtesan. In 2004 she entered the University of Melbourne Union House Theatre Design Mentor Program working with established theater designer Anna Tregloan as her mentor.
