STATEMENT
James Lofton creates complexly through simplicity by capitalizing on the unconscious as the driving force for his abstract paintings.
Visually these refined abstractions are void of referential noise of reality while leaving the essence of color’s rhythmic quality. These textured works use a combination of both communal materials and foraged materials like sand, pigment and copal. He employs a variety of techniques when applying these materials to canvas, paper and wood panel.
To Lofton, making art is like a religious practice, founded in dedication and faith. In turn, he believes his paintings paint themselves.
