Emma Coulter

“Emma Coulter’s abstract imagery is informed by her training and interest in both fine art and design. The resulting works defy ”….the traditional notion of structure and challenge the notion of what is a finished product.” (E.Coulter, 2007) In the production of her latest suite Coulter deliberately engages in a sightless and spontaneous process of working, without any preconceived ideas or commitment to the end product.

Through this approach to painting, Coulter creates evocative compositions of colour, shape and form, rich in depth, contrast and meaning. The works are subconscious manifestations by Coulter, that represent a rebellion against established rules and accepting the status quo. Coulter draws inspiration from New York’s great abstract expressionists of the 1940’s and 1950’s, finding an affinity with the attitude and aesthetic of the movement.

Emma Coulter recently relocated from Queensland to Melbourne. She had her first exhibition in Melbourne,’Twofold’ last year, after having exhibited in both solo and group exhibitions in Sydney and Brisbane.
