Ash Keating
Contemporary visual artist Ash Keating was born in Melbourne, Australia in 1980. Keating completed a Bachelor of Fine Art in Painting at Monash University, Caulfield in 2003 and then went on to complete a first class BFA Honours year at the Victorian College of the Arts in 2006.
Keating’s work has been written about extensively in numerous art journals such as Frieze, Broadsheet, Art and Australia, Un, Artlink and Photofile. He was the winner of a 2008 ANZ Art and Australia RIPE award, as well as being selected as a finalist in the 2011 Blake Prize, the 2011 Substation Contemporary Art Award, the 2009 Qantas SOYA awards and the 2009 RBS Australian emerging artist awards.
Keating undertook a studio residency at Gertrude Contemporary in Fitzroy, Victoria, between 2009 and 2011, and will undertake a project in Oct/Nov 2011 in Seoul, Korea at Art Sonje in collaboration with Gertrude Contemporary.
Ash Keating has exhibited extensively in solo and group gallery exhibitions in Australia since 2004, including recent solo exhibitions at Latrobe University of Modern Art and Utopian Slumps in Melbourne and BREENSPACE in Sydney, as well as being represented in group exhibitions at Gertrude Contemporary, Bus Projects, West Space, Linden Centre of Contemporary Arts, Monash Gallery of Art, Monash University of Modern Art and RMIT Gallery Melbourne, CACSA Adelaide and Artspace, Sydney.
Keating’s projects created interstate in Australia include ‘Activate 2750’ (2009) undertaken in Penrith NSW , through the MCA ’s C3West initiative. In Melbourne, Keating has undertaken many projects including ‘Work in Progress’ and ‘Support Can Make the Difference’ (2006),’Toyota Waste Audit’ (2007), ‘Parched’ (2007) / COPENHAGEN ? (2009), ‘2020?’ (2008) at Arts House Meat Market and ‘Eureco Revolution’ (2009) undertaken during a residency at Ballarat Art Academy.
Keating has created several ambitious site-specific art projects internationally including, ‘Pascua Lama’ (2006) at the Museo de Contemporeano, Santiago, Chile, ‘Label Land’ (2008) in Seoul, Korea, ‘Timuran’ (2009) in Jogjakarta Indonesia, ‘Ascension’ (2011) at 3331 Arts Chiyoda, Tokyo Japan, and ‘Gardensity’ (2009-2011) for the 6th SCAPE Christchurch Biennial of Art in Public Space in Christchurch New Zealand.
Keating is represented by Fehily Contemporary in Melbourne, and BREENSPACE in Sydney.
