Wonderlust

Ongoing exhibition

Art Gallery of Western Australia

Thursday 01 January 2009 to Friday 01 January 2010
Wonderlust is a dynamic presentation of the State Art Collection, featuring Indigenous, Australian and International art, craft and design acquired since the Gallery's inception in 1895.

The exhibition aims to transform the visitor’s experience of, and access to, the Collection through new journeys of discovery organised around five key themes: Home, Mapping, Presence, Story and Material Gesture.

Wonderlust brings together painting, sculpture, photography, works on paper, craft and projections, which range in date from one of the earliest Western Australian works in the Collection, Frederick Garling’s 1827 views of the Swan River, to recent works from 2006-2007 – such as Julie Dowling’s painting of Indigenous resistance fighter, Yagan; contemporary sculpture by James Angus; and ceramics by Pru Venables.

Wonderlust includes a dedicated children’s activity area – wonderland.

Take a new journey through your Collection and explore some of the complex relationships between people and water via artworks in the Wonderlust Water Walk.

The Gallery has produced a range of brochures, Wonderlust Self Guided Tours, to assist you in your own self-paced tour, according to your interests and mood.

The Sensational Art Program offers booked, guided Touch Tours and hands on art activities for sight impaired visitors. Wonderlust Touch Tours
