Lee’s much anticipated solo exhibition in April is his first at Karen Woodbury Gallery, Melbourne. He has recently been included in a wide range of contemporary curatorial exhibitions and has been listed in Australian Art Collector’s 50 Most Collectable Artists on two occasions.
Rhys Lee’s paintings are strongly influenced by his continued experimentation with paint. His palette is often unorthodox with pastels contrasted with blacks, greys and browns. In this exhibition oil paintings explore the subconscious and imagination realised with a high level of spontaneity that conveys a speedy and experimental technique. The faces in these paintings look as if they are either disappearing or appearing from the dark depths of negative space. Often the central point of contact in these works – the eyes – dart out and simultaneously engage and disturb the viewer.
The works for this exhibition will comprise of medium size oil on linen works and three-dimensional bronze sculptures within and around an installation construction in the gallery space. These sculptures will draw inspiration upon fauna and potent cultural imagery. The exhibition will coincide with the launch of a limited edition 300 page artist book produced by Lee that highlights his work and experiences over the past decade.
