Paul Yore

Paul Yore is a young Melbourne artist who is presenting a new, site-specific version of an installation made from numerous throwaway items both natural and artificial.

Simultaneously seductive and sickly sweet, the intricately organized chaos of The Big Rainbow Funhouse of Cosmic Brutality reflects the incongruous nature of our world where we blindly and voraciously consume yet worry about how we can sustain the planet and not destroy livelihoods and nature. Yore fashions plastic throwaway items and glittery psychedelia into totemic arrangements and spaces for reflection, patching together a joyful and contemplative garden of delights, wherein this cheap detritus may function in a new way. The artist aims to transform the profane, inanimate remains of our messed-up civilization into ‘solemn monuments to the nonsensical nature of existence’.

His installation draws upon a mélange of influences, from Dada and Surrealism to the exuberant offerings of folk and outsider art, and various sacred arts and architectures. This tinkering with styles and a disregard for cultural difference honours our bewildering postmodern life, which at the same time is the subject of the work’s disquieting investigation.
