Kari Henriksen - Being at Bundanon
Catherine Asquith Gallery
The impetus for my work comes from sense of wonder and delight in observing the phenomena of constantly changing light and atmosphere, seasons and weather conditions. Making art from such evanescent subject matter provides a means of preserving moments in time, moments that have now passed.
During my residency at Bundanon last JulyI focused my attention on the daily ‘life’ of the river, the tidal fluctuations at the river’s edge, the ‘writing’ produced by tidal detritus, the changes in light, and the atmospheric affects of weather. In the studio at Bundanon I created a series of images that identified specific moments in time and sequenced them together in the form of concertina artist books to create various narratives relating to this period of time. These books titled:Book of Tides, Book of Reflections, Book or Shorelines, Book of Morning Mist and Book of Afternoon Light, focus on the temporal aspect of my Bundanon experience.
When I returned to my own studio the books then provided the impetus from which to develop a subsequent body of work in the form of large format unique state pigment ink prints and oil paintings.
