Robert Baines: Metal
The Next Living Treasure
The Living Treasures: Masters of Australian Craft series celebrates the achievements of Australia’s iconic and influential crafts practitioners and makes prominent the work of these Australian artists whose exemplary craft skills have been recognised by their peers. Each year, the Living Treasures series features the selected artist through a solo exhibition of new work, a stunning full-colour monograph publication that records the artist’s career, a public talk and a national tour of the exhibition. The series acknowledges their wealth and dynamism that has contributed to the Australian studio crafts movement.
The Living Treasures: Masters of Australian Craft program was launched as an initiative of Object: Australian Centre for Craft and Design. The exhibition series began in 2005 with Les Blakeborough: Ceramics, continued in 2006 with Klaus Moje: Glass, with Marian Hosking: Jewellery in 2007, Liz Williamson: Textiles in 2008, Jeff Mincham: Ceramics in 2009, and Robert Baines: Metal in 2010.
This nationally recognised program significantly expands the knowledge base about Australian craft and design practice and its contribution to Australian cultural life. The Living Treasures series supports key areas of focus by the Australian Craft and Design Centres (ACDC) network including sector development, education and artist sustainability. It also supports the private and public gallery sectors and the collector market.
The Living Treasures artists are selected by an independent seven juror panel made up of nationally respected experts in the fields of craft and design.
