Context and composition have always been important elements in the work of Geoff Falk – a sense of belonging, of feeling at one with the land expressed through human narratives of place. Inherent in these stories is the balance of tension and rest, of colour, light and shade.

“ When creating one of these works. I give context by showing surrounding areas, familiar icons of the place I’m illustrating. I also try to tell a human story with people using the place, and being ‘in the moment.’”

Falk has a strong respect for the earth and its inhabitants, which is expressed in his paintings; he visually constructs stories that propose an understanding of the land and the people that inhabit it. Colour is an important tool in this investigation, whether it be the colours of an outback experience in an overland rail trip from Darwin back to Melbourne in the 1970s or his more recent travels to Vietnam that provided him with another palette of gorgeous colour, emotions and people.

Falk’s work enables people to visualise and understand the environment in which they live. His paintings act as metaphorical conduits for life proposing a connection to place and a deeper understanding of how Western cultures have affected the land upon which we live.
