Irene Wellm

Her beautifully painted large canvases surround the viewer, allowing them to enter into a world that is surreal and disquieting. The images are luminous, creating dreamscape environments that are loaded with intriguing motifs.

Following on from her recent series, Irene Wellm’s work continues to develop and explore pattern, shape and rhythm in forms, this time, with more delineated contrasts which reference the technique of chiarascuro, as well as indulging in a life-long love affair with the deepest shadows of film noir.

In this upcoming exhibition, “Her Fragrant Frown”, Wellm’s women have stolen the scene with a strong surface presence; but they also present an undertow of expectations, desires and sublimations. Biography
Irene Wellm resides and works in Melbourne where in 2001 she completed a Master of Fine Art from the Victorian College of the Arts. She has had numerous solo and group shows throughout Melbourne, Sydney, Western Australia and most recently in the U.K. Wellm was short-listed for the ANZ Visual Arts Fellowship Award, was an Australian finalist for the UBS Art Award, London, and a winner of the Darebin La Trobe Emerging Artist Acquisitive Art Prize. Most recently she was included in the publication “Contemporary Art Studio”, published in Beijing. More recently Irene has been shortlisted as a finalist in St.George Art Award, (Hurstville City Museum & Gallery), and the Stan and Maureen Duke Gold Coast Art Prize (Art Centre Gold Coast).

Irene Wellm’s work is held in the following collections: Artbank, LaTrobe University Art Museum, the Ballarat Regional Gallery, the City of Darebin Art Collection, La Trobe University, Stockwelll Downs and private collections in Australia, Germany, Switzerland and the U.S.
