Peter Cooley

Cooley treats his sculptures in an organic manner. With few preliminary sketches, he works directly on the ceramic surface, made up of an earth base. These objects mimic the rock, the light and the water level, resulting in a complete immersion of object and subject.

Cooley was recently awarded the Gold Coast 2010 International Ceramic Art Prize. He is represented in most state and regional art galleries and was honoured with a survey exhibition at Bathurst Regional Art Gallery 2009 and a joint exhibition with Toni Warburton at Wollongong City Gallery, 2009/2010.

My work for the last seven years has been a combination of painting and ceramics. I returned to ceramics after a seven year period focusing mainly on painting. The reason for this came out of a desire to push the medium in a painterly way, to make three dimensional paintings using ceramics. – Peter Cooley, 2010
