James Parrett + Emma Langridge: intersect
Gould Galleries
The elegance and simplicity of the line inspire both artists – straight lines for Emma; curvilinear for James. Unconcerned by fashion, they explore these non-objective motivations utilizing individually set rule, which may of course be broken as new aesthetic possibilities reveal themselves.
James Parrett’s continuing fascination is with the aesthetic potential of the circular form. Through the dissection and reconfiguration of radial arcs, new and intriguing possibilities are created by the artist which challenge and defy a viewer’s expectations.
Emma Langridge’s paintings create a classic visual conundrum. Physically, they are composed of few elements – line, proportion, colour, support and medium – but visually and perceptually, they resonate with incredible complexity.
James Parrett has been a finalist three times for the McClelland Contemporary Sculpture Award (2005, 2007, 2010), four times for the Montalto Winery Sculpture Prize (2006, 2007, 2009, 2010) and twice for the Toorak Village Festival of Sculpture (2008, 2010). He has also participated multiple times in Sculpture by the Sea (Sydney) and Lome Sculpture Prize (Victoria). Recent commissions include Mandalay at Beveridge for Metricon and the Hume Highway Commission (Beveridge, 2009), the Australind foyer, Rhodes Corporate Park (Sydney, 2008) and a wall piece for Becasse Restaurant (Sydney, 2006).
Emma Langridge completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts (honours) at the University of Western Australia in 1996. Following critically acclaimed exhibitions with Goddard de Fiddes Gallery in Perth, her work entered the prestigious collections of Heytesbury/Homed a Court and Bankwest. Since relocating to Melbourne in 2001, Emma has held seven solo shows and participated in fifteen significant group exhibitions across Australia, and is represented in numerous important public, corporate and private collections. She was recently commissioned to create artwork multiples for the Citadines Hotel in Melbourne.
