Sam Grigorian - “Breaking Ranks”

He seeks out not ordinary or commercial paper, but rather those fragments – handmade, parchments, offcuts – that reveal the marks and traces of their original use; paper that has a history. Through his processes of ripping, scratching, staining and layering, Grigorian exposes the hidden realities of the paper, the structures beneath the surface. Employing a repertoire of simple, geometrical forms and monochromatic colours combined with amorphous figures, Grigorian creates intense visual narratives that are both abstract and ambiguous, but which also create a free space in which the viewer can invoke their own personal associations.

About Sam Grigorian
Sam Grigorian was born in 1957 in Yerevan, Armenia, and currently lives and works in Berlin, Germany. He has exhibited widely in Europe, with recent solo exhibitions at Galerie Molwo, Switzerland, Kunst & Co, Daimler Chrysler Haus, State Gallery Eberswalde and the Deutsche Guggenheim (Germany). Grigorian has participated in numerous group exhibitions including Gala Exhibition, Armenian Abstract Artists (Modern Art Museum of Armenia, Yerevan), Armenian Modern Art (Musée du Luxemburg, Paris) and Bunker at Alexanderplatz (Deutsche Guggenheim, Berlin and Gallery De Rijk, The Hague, The Netherlands). Grigorian is represented in various public collections including New Orleans Museum of Art (USA) and private collections in Germany, Armenia, Switzerland, The Netherlands, USA and Australia. This will be Grigorian’s third solo exhibition with Anna Pappas Gallery.
