Animal Human Landscape

TINNING ST GALLERY

Thursday 19 May 2011 to Sunday 29 May 2011
Opening Thursday 19 May 2011 6-9pm
Animal Human Landscape is a show case of recent works by Melbourne artist, Carla Fletcher. Running May 19 - 29 at Tinning St Gallery in Brunswick, Melbourne

Fletcher’s 2010 Archibald Prize finalist portrait of CW Stoneking will be on show for the first time in Melbourne since it’s year long Archibald Prize tour across New South Wales.

‘Emerging Artist Carla Fletcher presents the current pinup boy of the Australian Blues scene, in all his rootsy glory.
Like Clifton Pugh’s 1972 portrait of Gough Whitlam, Fletcher portrays Stoneking on the cusp of taking the world stage. – Brad Franks, Muswellbrook Regional Arts Centre.

Alongside Fletcher’s break through portrait is her 2011 Archibald portrait of Australian Actor, Writer and Director Joel Edgerton.

“Joel Edgerton is hitting Hollywood big time but his loyalty to the Australian Film Industry as an actor, writer and director is what has impressed me the most.
It’s important that we feed back into our own culture. Take risks and give back as creatives to this amazing country, Joel is doing that.”

Happily pushing any curatorial precept, a large element to the show and sitting in stark contrast to the Archibald Prize portraits are Fletcher’s beloved animals.

Fletcher firmly believes that as this planet fostered all the amazing animals, birds and flowers that greeted the coming of civilization – our land, with our consciousness should provide their everlasting sanctuary. The array of animals on show are to highlight the importance of their plight.

Also included is an exciting first time collaboration with Melbourne’s botanic Artisan – Wunderplant – live plant installations within the space to push the shows title into it’s totality.
