Arthur and Corinne Cantrill: Light Years

ACMI - Australian Centre for the Moving Image

Tuesday 08 March 2011 to Sunday 05 June 2011
Arthur and Corinne Cantrill have been making films together for over fifty years. As pioneering avant-garde filmmakers, they have worked with unwavering passion and focus, creating a body of work that remains intriguing, authentic and utterly original. Light Years celebrates the remarkable career of these singular Australian artists.

The Cantrill’s first films were documentaries on the creative play of children, but they rapidly developed their own independent, experimental practice. Their work ranges across styles and subject matter – from the ‘Expanded Cinema’ performances of the 1970s to landscape studies and experiments in colour printing, which explored their fascination with visual perception and the nature of time in cinema.

This exhibition includes a selection of films transferred from 16mm to digital video, along with notes and artefacts used by the Cantrills in the creation of their work. It also provides an overview of the Cantrill’s extensive international screening history, through flyers, posters, press clippings and photographs; from New York’s MoMA to the Melbourne Super 8 Group.

Selections from Cantrill’s Filmnotes, a vibrant journal of independent and experimental film and video that Arthur and Corinne produced as a labour of love for over thirty years, will also be on display.
