Mark Dober: After the Rain

Describing his work, Mark says “I make my work on location in the landscape. I seek to paint with directness and immediacy. I hope to convey a sense of engagement – a feeling of being there at a particular place at a particular time. Colour is a subject of abiding interest to me: it can help to convey the vitality of nature; serve to clarify spatial relationships; it may even set up a kind of vibration and energy… For me, colour has an intrinsic beauty of its own…”

In 2005, Mark received his PhD in Fine Art (Painting), alongside being awarded the Mollie Holman Doctoral Medal. He has been a finalist in numerous art awards, most notably, the Fletcher Jones Art Prize (2010), the John Leslie Art Prize, (2006, 2008), the John Glover Art Prize (2008), the Fleurieu Prize (2004), and the Swan Hill Regional Art Gallery Print and Drawing Award (2010).

His work has been extensively reviewed in the press throughout the past decade, and his own writings have been prolific and well documented. More recently he considered the work of David Hockney and Rick Amor, and most recently, he reviewed Robert Nelson’s The Visual Language of Painting: An aesthetic analysis of representational technique, (Art Monthly, May 2011).

Mark’s work is held in collections, both private and corporate, throughout Australia.
