Christine Hubay Blow

This exhibition represents a significant shift in Hubay’s art practice. The focus of much of her earlier work has been figurative with a highly personal narrative. This style has recently given way to a new process, which the artist has found both exhilarating and liberating.

Hubay’s new paintings are large in scale and abstract in nature. High contrast with a limited palette, they combine dripped enamel with chance and gravity. Some retain a hint of past figuration. Some suggest Rorschach ink blots, others are reminiscent of cavernous spaces replete with stalactites and stalagmites. The beauty of these paintings is in their simplicity. Like staring at clouds, they draw in the viewer.

Hubay completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts and the VCA in 1990 and then a postgraduate degree in 1992, also at the VCA . This will be her first exhibition at Jenny Port Gallery.
