Listening and Being

Bus Projects

Tuesday 21 June 2011 to Saturday 09 July 2011
Opening Tuesday 21 June 2011 6pm-8pm
Listening and Being is an installation and live-art performance relating to the action, spaces and codes of listening and reflection.

A large-scale mirror will stretch diagonally across the gallery (and into the reception area) as a site of both aesthetics and participation – a ‘listening wall’ for one’s self.
As well as a play on the idea of ‘reflection’ as a psycho-spiritual term, this mirrored work reflects and refracts the space of the gallery, creating a new space within which active listening can take place.

Throughout the exhibition, Lauren will conduct several listening performances, at increasing amounts of time: 2, 4 and 8-hour sessions of keen listening and public introspection. Gallery-goers are also invited to enter the work and listen to themselves reflected.

Biography
Influenced by conceptual, installation and performance arts practice (where meaning, language, behaviour and experience are key),
Lauren Brown’s project-based work is primarily concerned with sound in the public space and our relationship to it. Listening as a performance and as a meaningful way to influence the public realm is a focus for her current work. She can be found in Melbourne, Berlin and on her blog she sees red.
