Christina Hayes - Before I Wake
Anna Pappas Gallery
Local living pigeon fanciers who breed pigeons to fly and deliver long distance handwritten messages such as those used during wartime and characters who transmit messages through sea voyages such as sailors, submariners and sea veterans, are the protagonists in this series. Fascinated by the historic methods of communication and the people who persevere with them, Hayes has captured a rare sort of people that dominate her imagination.
Christina Hayes completed a Bachelor of Fine Art at the Victorian College of the Arts in 2004. Since then she has held solo and group exhibitions with Anna Pappas Gallery in 2010, Bus Projects in 2009, and TCB art inc in 2008. Other shows include Tent of Miracles Development Show at 45 Downstairs, and Keys to the House, also at TCB art inc. In addition, Hayes has completed a number of curatorial projects for Arts Projects Australia, including the group exhibition Best in Show and solo presentation of works by Steven Ajzenberg in 2010. She has exhibited in collaborative shows, most notably A Good Death, with the Sisters Hayes at Next Wave Festival, 2010 and The Agents at Gertrude Contemporary. Hays has received a NAVA Visual and Craft Artists’ Grant and a City of Melbourne Young Artist Grant. She lives and works in Melbourne and is represented by Anna Pappas Gallery.
