GARY HEALEY In Honour of the Chinese Glaze Masters

Catherine Asquith Gallery

Tuesday 20 September 2011 to Saturday 15 October 2011
This body of work pays tribute to the Chinese masters of copper red glazes. It is during the reign of K’ang-hsi (1667-1722) that the copper red glazed ware of China came into its own, with the production of blood red, peach bloom, crushed strawberry, maroon red and flambé red glazes.

To European collectors this is the greatest period of Chinese porcelain; three-quarters of the best specimens of Chinese porcelain in museums and private collections belong to this prolific period.

Peach bloom glazes are a soft pinkish red that darkens in some parts and pales in others, and displays green, often a bright moss green, either in patches or in small speckled areas. A blood red glaze has changing tints from a brilliant cherry red below the shoulder to a massed blood red where the glaze has formed thickly above the base. The glaze has left a thin white band at the top of the piece as the colour in the glaze moved down in the firing. Flambe red glazes are licked by streaks of blue.

The glazes in this exhibition have been carefully developed and tested over the last four years. They are modern day versions of those from the K’ang-hsi period. The porcelain forms, and the alterations to some, are designed to show off these exquisite glazes, particularly their subtlety, colour grading and fluescentness.

Gary Healey has been a practising professional artist since 2003, exhibiting consistently since that time. His work has been well documented in the press, in particular, “The Journal of Australian Ceramics”. His work is held in a number of private and corporate collections, notably, the Seldon Gill Australia/New Zealand Collection, Victorian College of the Arts, Myer Collection, and the Mint Museum of Craft & Design, North Carolina (US). In between his exhibiting commitments, Gary also takes private classes.

“In Honour of the Chinese Glaze Masters” commences on 20th September and continues 15th October 2011.
