David-Ashley Kerr is a visual artist working in large-format photography.

This is his debut Australian solo show, a selection of landscape studies completed since 2009 that began as a photographic investigation into the Rückenfigur, or “back figure”. This visual device is most commonly associated with German Romantic painter Caspar David Friedrich.

It involves depicting a human figure that does not engage the viewer, introspectively contemplating the natural world or landscape before them.

Kerr is currently undertaking a PhD at Monash University, his research inquiring into the visualisation of place, in the context of Australian cultural identity and its relationship to physical environment.

David-Ashley Kerr is a board member of Melbourne ARI , Dear Patti Smith. He lives and works in Melbourne.
