P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center is one of the oldest and largest non-profit contemporary art institutions in the United States. An exhibition space rather than a collecting institution, P.S.1 devotes its energy and resources to displaying the most experimental art in the world. A catalyst and an advocate for new ideas, discourses, and trends in contemporary art, P.S.1 actively pursues emerging artists, new genres, and adventurous new work by recognized artists in an effort to support innovation in contemporary art. P.S.1 achieves this mission by presenting its diverse program to a broad audience in a unique and welcoming environment in which visitors can discover and explore the work of contemporary artists. P.S.1 presents over 50 exhibitions each year, including artists’ retrospectives, site-specific installations, historical surveys, arts from across the United States and the world, and a full schedule of music and performance programming.

Garry Winogrand was a key figure in American photography, who in the 1960s began to advance a highly personalized visual language that challenged the notion of the photographer as an objective witness. Winogrand’s series The Animals comprises black-and-white, wide-angle photographs of people visiting New York zoos and its one aquarium at Coney Island.

Matthew Radune, Heather Dewey-Hagborg, and Thomas Dexter present OPEN CIRCUIT , an interactive sonic architecture that transforms tools of surveillance into instruments of creative play. Exploring themes of institutional control and creative freedom, the visitors’ movement within the space triggers audio sensors that generate original, accumulative sound.

Brandon Stosuy hosts a conversation between artist Adam Helms and curator Klaus Kertess, with a special performance by Nate Young and John Olson (of Detroit-based post-industrial/noise band Wolf Eyes), who present their STARE CASE project.

For the final iteration of Greater New York’s Rotating Gallery, guest curator Clarissa Dalrymple has selected works by three artists who span two generations. Rather than proposing an overarching theme, Rotation 4 brings together a range of painting, sculpture, and prints that suggest connections and disconnections initiated by their physical proximity within the gallery.

Greater New York
In conjunction with the Greater New York exhibition, the basement level Vault will be transformed into a movie theater for screenings of films and video. Film curators Thomas Beard and Ed Halter, cofounders of Light Industry, Brooklyn, have been invited to program the theater with an ongoing presentation of narrative films and special screenings.

Greater New York: Rotating Gallery
In conjunction with the Greater New York exhibition, MoMA PS1 ’s First Floor Painting Gallery will be dedicated to 5 Year Review, a showcase of some of the most important exhibitions, performances, concerts, movies, fashion, design, happenings, and events to have occurred in the past half decade.
Greater New York: 5 Year Review
The Comfort of Strangers, opening at MoMA PS1 on July 31, is the third iteration of MoMA PS1 ’s Rotating Gallery series. Rotating Gallery, a series of five-week installations that are presented in conjunction with quinquennial exhibition Greater New York, showcases the practices of four under-recognized New York-based curators: Olivia Shao, Kate Fowle, Cecilia Alemani, and Clarissa Dalrymple.

The backroom invites the exhibitors to present source materials that inform and support their thinking, extending the potential for getting to know the artists and their work. More akin to a temporary archive and reading room than an exhibition, the backroom consists of participant’s influences, inspiration, and research.

In conjunction with the Greater New York exhibition, the Rotating Gallery has offered space for additional curatorial voices, namely four New York-based curators who work without a regular physical space. The first rotation, The Baghdad batteries is organized by Olivia Shao.

On the occasion of the upcoming MoMA retrospective Marina Abramović: The Artist Is Present (opening March 14), P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center will reinstall Marina Abramović’s Chair for Man and His Spirit. Abramović created the work especially for P.S.1 on the occasion of their 1997 reopening.
