The Art Gallery of South Australia holds one of Australia’s finest art collections, housed in one of Adelaide’s most beautiful historic buildings. It is centrally located on leafy North Terrace between the South Australian Museum and the University of Adelaide, and has been an important cultural focus since its establishment in 1881, only forty-five years after the first European settlers arrived.

The Elder Wing, the original building, was designed in 1897 and opened in early 1900. In 1936 the two level Melrose Wing was added, another wing at the back of the Gallery opened in 1962, and the West Wing extensions, which doubled the size of the Gallery, opened in March 1996.

The new West Wing houses collection display space, the temporary exhibitions gallery, Bookshop, and Restaurant. There are several areas available for hire which are suitable for a variety of functions, including a lecture theatre.

The Art Gallery is located on leafy North Terrace approximately half way between Kintore Avenue and Frome Road between the South Australian Museum and the University of Adelaide.

Rupert Bunny: Artist in Paris
Doreen Reid Nakamarra was an extremely talented artist and a highly regarded ambassador for the Pintupi people. This display pays tribute to her and the other Pintupi women artists who are gaining worldwide recognition for their unique and sophisticated style of painting.
A Tribute to Doreen Reid Nakamarra
This display pays tribute to the beauty and artistry of the book, presenting works that are vital to its historical development. From early austere woodcut illustrations of the northern Renaissance to elaborate plates produced by artists in private presses of the early twentieth century, the works comprise three kinds of book-related artwork: illustration, bookplates and artists’ books.
Ex Libris: The Printed Image and the Art of the book
Recent acquisitions of Australian and international art. Some of the works included explore the representation of race: from African–American artist Kara Walker’s screenprint Emancipation Approximation scene #5, to British-born, Trinidad-based artist Chris Ofili, whose prints Black Kiss represent the Biblical story of Judas betraying Christ with a kiss in the Garden of Gethsemane.
Contemporary Australian and International Art
Meet our newest acquisition, Big Mother, a monumental sculpture of a genetically-engineered primate breastfeeding a human baby, by leading contemporary Australian artist Patricia Piccinini, now on display.
