In many urban cosmopolitan societies, an individual finds themselves in a position of conformity in a subtle subconscious manner. In this frenzy of achieving apparently greater heights, few stop to wonder if their personal identity has been the product of compromise in this materialistic world that sets conformity as a prerequisite to success.
Questions that one might consider largely philosophical are intricately asked and answered through dance in, “Standing In Line In Order Of Height,” a cross cultural dance performance brought together by Maya Dance Theatre, Singapore and QL2 , Canberra, Australia.
This performance choreographed by Kavitha Krishnan, Creative Director of Maya Dance Theatre, Ruth Osbourne, Artistic Director of QL2 and award winning choreographer Liz Lea from UK evokes the essence of Asian (Bharatha Natyam) and Australian dance types threaded together in exquisitely nuanced ways to show the way in which each one of us is programmed to behave in an expected fashion to conform with the expectations of the society in which we live. As the dance progresses, a juxtaposition surfaces, showcasing the tension that exists between the individuals and the spirit of conformity governed by the society.
Just as the rights to individualism is embedded in each person being able to express themselves freely, this performance will epitomize the importance of self-expression and yet the need to conform and its outcome through dance and movement. In synch with the increasingly globalized world, dance too will earn its own right to globalization through the multi-national and multi-ethnic cast of performers and choreographers.
Come explore your own experience with conformity versus individualism by placing yourself in an expressionistic platform with the dancers.
