Art Projects International (API) was founded by Jung Lee Sanders in 1993, with its gallery space originally located on Broome Street in SoHo. At that time, API was one of the first galleries in New York dedicated to promoting and providing a platform for contemporary artists from Asia. Over the years, the gallery has played an instrumental role in fostering the careers of many artists and has developed a unique presence in New York. API is noted for its representation of artists with diverse international backgrounds.

Many of API ’s shows and projects have received critical acclaim in major international publications including The New York Times, The New Yorker, Artforum, Art in America, Art News, Art Asia Pacific, The San Francisco Chronicle and Flash Art. Gallery artists have been prominently featured worldwide in solo and group exhibitions at major museums and cultural institutions in Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and the United States. Works by the gallery artists are represented in the permanent collections of MoMA (NY), The Whitney Museum of American Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Brooklyn Museum, Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art, San Jose Museum of Art, Shanghai Art Museum, National Museum of China, National Museum of Contemporary Art Korea, Leeum Samsung Museum of Art (Seoul) and the Farjam Collection (Dubai) among others.

In 2011, API opened its newest exhibition space in the historic district of TriBeCa in Manhattan.
