NYEHAUS , a new gallery located in The National Arts Club and run by noted collector, curator and philanthropist Tim Nye, will create a context for the critical and in-depth exploration of work by important contemporary artists, predominantly those in mid-career. NYEHAUS will collaborate with artists and their dealers to bring together work that has already garnered some critical attention but has yet to be presented in a focused gallery exhibition. In addition, NYEHAUS will commission new work by artists in order to expand and enliven the dialogue within an artist’s oeuvre.

The rich cultural and architectural history of The National Arts Club, headquartered at 15 Gramercy Park South, was of particular interest to Nye, who over the years has shown a passion for developing the identity of a cultural space around its historical roots. His first exhibition and performance venue, Thread Waxing Space, was a former thread-waxing factory, which Nye largely left untouched in order to preserve its historical identity and to go against the predominant idea of the gallery space as a ‘white cube.’ In light of The National Arts Club’s rich architectural history, Nye is enthusiastic about the prospects of expanding the cultural programming of NYEHAUS beyond the exhibition walls to the Club’s many eclectic galleries.

NYEHAUS is a new model for the contemporary art gallery and is similar in spirit to Alfred Stieglitz’s Gallery 291, which defined the standards for 20th- century Modernism and presented carefully considered selections of avant-garde art for sale. NYEHAUS ’ mission is to offer a critical perspective on the increasingly fractured and international art world of the 21st century.

NYEHAUS will host four to six exhibitions of work a year by established artists. Past exhibitions include installations of work by Martin Kippenberger, Paul McCarthy, George Baselitz, Serge Spitzer, Jacqueline Humphries, Keith Farquhar, Sigmar Polke, Richard Tuttle, Tony Oursler, Tim Hawkinson, Anj Smith and Sherrie Levine. Öyvind Fahlström, Djordje Ozbolt, and Christopher Orr are some of the artists on the roster for future projects. NYEHAUS exhibitions will be accompanied by substantial publications and supporting events. Tim Nye’s extensive involvement with the arts and his experience as a collector focusing on work by Rirkrit Tiravanija, Keith Tyson, Simon Starling, Martin Kippenberger, Kai Althoff, Paulina Olowska, and Lucy McKenzie have helped him develop an informed understanding of contemporary art. Nye has a BA in art history from Cornell University, an MBA from Columbia University, and participated in the Whitney Museum’s Independent Curatorial Studies Program. Currently on the board of the New Museum, and Chairman of the Board of Bomb Magazine, Nye has demonstrated diverse philanthropic activities.
