The gallery site had previously been the home of Aboriginal Art centre Birukmarri Gallery which established there in 1985. Japingka Gallery is based in an historic two-storey warehouse building in the heart of the port city of Fremantle. With four hundred square metres of exhibition space and stockrooms dedicated to contemporary Aboriginal Art, Japingka Gallery provides a broad view of the artworks of indigenous communities and regions and a selected exhibition program in its first floor galleries.
