Founded in 1975, we are one of Australia’s first contemporary art spaces. We run a program of exhibitions and events featuring local, national and international artists; emerging and established artists. Our program takes in aspects of the moving image, sound art and new music. We also publish. We receive major funding from Arts Queensland and the Australia Council and are a member of Australia’s Contemporary Art Organisations network (CAOS).

Peter Madden: Come Together
Over the last fifty years, New York film artist Ken Jacobs has made a massive contribution to experimental film and expanded-cinema performance. He is known for his pioneering two-hour 1969 structuralist film Tom, Tom, The Piper’s Son, which probes, deconstructs, and reorganises a D. W. Griffith short.

Brisbane Airport Fresh Cut is the IMA ’s annual showcase for emerging Queensland artists. This year’s instalment will feature four artists born or based in Queensland, up to six years out of art school, who have not shown at the IMA before. Each will be given $5000 towards the development of new work for the show.

Feminism Never Happened
Serbian artist Marina Abramovic has been called the grandmother of performance art. Her works have often involved pain and endurance. In Art Must Be Beautiful, Artist Must Be Beautiful, her iconic 1975 performance-for-video, she agressively combs and brushes her long hair, teasing it up, while repeating ‘art must be beautiful, artist must be beautiful’.

Greek philosopher Heraclitus is famed for his observation that ‘no man ever steps in the same river twice, for it’s not the same river and he’s not the same man.’ With its stellar international line-up, The Same River Twice deals with a hot theme in recent art—historical reenactment. The artists all remake or recall history, with a twist.
