Geraldton Regional Art Gallery

The Geraldton-Greenough Regional Art (Gallery) serves as the largest dedicated Art Gallery in the Midwest. The Midwest covers an area of 470 000 square kilometres and has a population of 50 498 (Midwest Development Commission, June 2000).

The Gallery is jointly funded and operated by the City of Geraldton-Greenough and the Art Gallery of Western Australia. It is the home of the City of Geraldton-Greenough Collection.

Geraldton has a vibrant visual arts culture and supports arts study courses through Edith Cowan University and Tafe, an Art and Cultural Development Council and Gallery, the Art Society and Gallery, and the Marra Aboriginal Art Gallery.

The structure of the building allows for different gallery ‘spaces’ enabling several concurrent exhibitions. The Gallery attracts international, national and local exhibitions. Local and emerging artists are actively encouraged and supported in their use of the Project Gallery space to show works or installations. As well as these gallery spaces within the City of Geraldton-Greenough, the Gallery provides an education program, which is available to local schools and outlying areas through an Outreach program.

Regular art and craft workshops take place in the Gallery and after hours functions include exhibition openings and films.

The City of Geraldton-Greenough maintains the two-storey building and grounds and provides administrative support. A wheelchair access toilet and lift were installed in 2001.

The Gallery is open six days per week and employs two full-time and two part-time paid staff and several trained volunteers managed by the Regional Manager.
