Sausage Dogs save the world... Dachshund U.N.
Sculptor Bennett Miller, a 29-year-old artist from Perth, has created a replica of the former United Nations office in Geneva, Switzerland. The replica is installed outside Museum Victoria for the duration of the festival.
For three weekends, 47 Dachshunds, more commonly known as Sausage Dogs, will attempt to solve the world’s Human Rights issues.
Miller was able to put together his U.N. assembly with the help of the Dachshund Club of Victoria, whose initial skepticism was overcome once Miller was able to demonstrate that he wouldn’t “portray the dogs in a demeaning way.”
Whether or not this work comments on the futility of humanity’s attempt to effectively use ‘communication’ to solve world problems is of little consequence, because it’s just so enjoyable as a spectacle.
More animals in performance art please!
The last performance is this coming Saturday afternoon, and for those who can’t make it there’s a short video on the Museum Victoria website here.
